Lightspeed is one of the world's leading POS software brands. Many Swiss merchants know it, and some look for an alternative because of cost, simplicity or local support. This article compares the two approaches honestly, without claiming that one solution is better for everyone.

What Lightspeed does well

• rich software built for retail and restaurants, with many integrations (accounting, e-commerce, marketing)
• an offering suited to businesses with several points of sale and to those that also sell online
• customer support and online training resources

If you run several locations with online ordering, delivery or click and collect, these strengths matter. They are real.

The friction point: a subscription per register

Lightspeed works on a monthly subscription, with plans whose price rises with the features. On the Lightspeed Restaurant pricing page for Switzerland, viewed in September 2026, the plans are listed at CHF 89 (Basic), CHF 159 (Core) and CHF 249 (Pro) per month. Each additional register is billed CHF 49 per month. Several advanced features are marked as paid extras, and hardware is separate.

What this adds up to over five years

• Plan at CHF 89 per month: CHF 5,340 over 5 years
• Plan at CHF 159 per month: CHF 9,540 over 5 years
• Plan at CHF 249 per month: CHF 14,940 over 5 years
• Additional register at CHF 49 per month: CHF 2,940 over 5 years, per terminal
• LaKaisse lifetime license: CHF 590, paid once per terminal (without the Backoffice Cloud subscription, see below)

These figures exclude hardware, payment terminals and fees, which apply in every case. The gap comes from the software itself: with a subscription, you pay every month for as long as you use the cash register, with a lifetime license you pay once.

Hardware: iOS on one side, iOS and Android on the other

Lightspeed relies on the Apple ecosystem: for Lightspeed Restaurant (K-Series), the help documentation states that it runs on iPad and iPhone, with no Android support (viewed in September 2026). LaKaisse runs on iOS and on Android, including on professional Android POS terminals.

This choice matters over time: an Android POS terminal is built for intensive use in a shop, whereas an iPad is a consumer device, more fragile against knocks, liquids and the wear of a counter. You also stay free to reuse a tablet or smartphone you already own.

When Lightspeed remains the best choice

Let us be clear: if you need built-in online ordering, delivery and click and collect on a single platform, or a wide ecosystem of third-party integrations, Lightspeed is probably a better fit.
